Coastal air is hard on decks. Salt, damp mornings, and strong afternoon sun will gray and cup the wrong boards within a couple of seasons, so material choice matters.
We build in redwood, ipe, and composite, on pressure-treated framing and level footings. Boards are fastened hidden or from below, so there are no screw heads on the surface. Railings and built-in benches are framed in with the deck.
We often build decks around spas and hot tubs. Our gallery has three: a redwood deck in Santa Barbara, a cedar deck around a hot tub, and a raised deck in Goleta. When we build around a spa, we include an access panel so the equipment can be serviced later without pulling up boards.

Decking: questions we hear
Redwood, ipe, or composite?
Ipe is a dense hardwood that lasts a long time, and it costs more and is harder to work with. Redwood has a warm look and costs less, but needs sealing. Composite needs little upkeep, though it can get hot in direct sun and looks less natural. We talk through the trade-offs for your site at the estimate.
Does a deck need a permit?
Often, especially if it's raised off the ground or attached to the house. Rules differ by city and county, so check with the building department before work starts.
