DG Pathways
Decomposed granite and gravel paths — clean, permeable, low-maintenance walkways that fit the Santa Barbara aesthetic.
Decomposed granite, or DG, is a crushed-stone surface that suits Santa Barbara's Spanish and Craftsman houses. It has a warm color and a softer look than poured concrete.
A path lasts when it's built right: a compacted base, edging so the material doesn't spread into the beds, and a slight slope so water runs off. On paths with heavy use or a steeper grade, we can stabilize the DG so it stays firm.
DG and gravel are permeable, so rain soaks in instead of running off the property. Upkeep is an occasional raking and a top-up of material. The gravel path lined with salvias in our gallery shows how it can look.

Common questions
DG Pathways: questions we hear
Will DG get tracked into the house?
Some, especially when it's new. A stabilized surface and a doormat or hard landing at the door cut it down a lot.
Is DG okay for strollers and wheelchairs?
Stabilized, well-compacted DG works for strollers and many wheelchairs. Loose DG doesn't. If access is a priority, mention it at the estimate so we can plan the surface.
